I was in Alberston's (The grocery store) 10st West Palmdale Blvd. I over heard these two women talking in the frozen food section. One of the Ladies looked to be in her 30's, the other Lady was an elderly looked to be in her 70's could've been older. The younger Lady asked the elderly woman would she like chicken for dinner?
The elderly woman gets mad she says. "Hell no! we've been eating chicken like niggers all week, can we please change it up?". The younger woman was so embarrassed seeing that I heard what the elderly woman had said, she apologized to me. I said, No need for an apology ma'am thats just who she is, a wrinkled up old bigot.
The younger woman, she became hostile, raising her voice at me... "ARE YOU CALLING MY GRANDMOTHER A RACIST? I DARE YOU TO HAVE THE AUDACITY TO SPEAK TO HER THAT WAY WHEN SHE STOOD UP FOR CILVIL RIGHTS MARCHED WITH DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING; AND FED YOU PEOPLE DURING THE TIMES OF DEPRESSION".
I clapped my hands while smiling (being sarcastic) I replied, The fact that your grandmother "stood up for civil rights, marched with King, did that also give your grandmother or you the okay to speak in a racist overtone? Who are you people? What does that mean?
The grandmother buds in she replies, "lets get the hell up out of here!, that boy knows what I mean, he's not stupid, (she looks me) No offense young man; but as a child I was born and raised in Montgomery Alabama, is just the way we spoke... "Nigger" is just a word, just like when they called me white cracker or honkey it didn't mean a damn thing, so stop being so sensitive.
The manager of the store came over asking was there a problem? The elderly Lady replied No Sire (The manager was white) The elderly continued speaking... There's no problem at all, I believe this young man completely understand where Im coming from I been around his kind all my life (she smiles)
From judging how the elderly lady mentality was, I ignored her and her grand daughters stupidity by walking away, smiling, continued shopping as if nothing was never said. They both starred at me, the grand daughter uttered out "what the hell is his problem"? (speaking to her grandmother)
I myself refuse to let anyone's ignorance ruin my day. Still I Rise! (Maya Angelou)
